When I think about worship, I think of the story in Luke 7, where the woman brought the jar of alabaster and broke it over Jesus’ head and then washed His feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. There is a breaking within yourself when true worship happens. As the drummer, I get to look out on the congregation every service. I get to see the breaking and honestly, I get to see the struggle and fight for people to worship.
There is a song out right now that states,
“Every time I walk out of the house, Put on another face, Just to blend in with the crowd. So nobody sees me, You would never believe me, But If I’m being honest, I not being honest.”
There are so many of us that go thru that process everyday but seems like Sundays are the main day. The house of God should be a place where we can be completely honest—A place that we can lay down every mask at his feet and just pour yourself out just like the woman with the perfume.
John 4:24 says,
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth.”
To worship in truth, you have to be honest! The jar of alabaster in that day was probably a year’s worth of wages. The disciples’ reaction shows that it was worth so much money. The woman took possibly everything she had and poured it out on Jesus. She was all in on worshiping Him!
My challenge is that the next time you have an opportunity to worship, be honest, take off all the masks, and worship in Spirit and Truth!
